The Anoka Cannabis Company is a newly planned municipal cannabis dispensary in the City of Anoka, currently under construction at 839 East River Road, adjacent to the city-owned Better Values Liquor store. A groundbreaking ceremony was held May 22, 2025, signaling the start of construction, with completion targeted for December 2025. Although adult-use cannabis dispensary licenses must allow privately owned competitors due to state law, Anoka is guaranteed at least one such license—this city-operated facility. The project was approved by a 4-1 City Council vote, reflecting Anoka’s experience with liquor sales dating back to 1937 and its recent introduction of low-dose cannabis beverages and edibles at the liquor store in July 2023. Proceeds from the dispensary may help fund local projects such as city parks, improvements to Green Haven Golf Course, levy reductions, and more. To involve the community, City leadership is hosting open dialogues (e.g. “Community Cannabis Conversation” on September 17) so residents can meet the management team, ask questions, and see what’s next.
